Dr .Michael Smith

Dr. Michael Smith has 14 years of teaching experience, both on the MSc programmes at the ICMA Centre at Reading University and on professional short courses. Prior to joining the ICMA Centre he spent 8 years ( London and Tokyo) as an options trader and then as a bond options broker. He currently teaches the MSc ISIB derivative securities module (pricing, hedging and trading) at the ICMA centre in the second semester, and in the first semester runs FX, bond and equity trading simulations using the FTS Trader case studies and RiskManager software.

He has been on the core faculty of the FAME programme in Lausanne and he is a visiting lecturer at the Doctoral School of Economics in Bucharest and The University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) in Cape-Town. He recently taught (via USB) a fixed income course to Kenyan debt traders in Nairobi, and delivers options and general derivatives workshops to market professionals in Dubai. He has also delivered courses for Hacettape University in Ankara, the Istanbul Stock Exchange, Exeter University, Birmingham University, Loughborough University and the Technical University of Munich

He has taught extensively in the professional market in the UK, and some of his more recent clients include JP Morgan Chase, Dresdner Kleinwort Wassertein, Morgan Stanley and CSFB. The large portfolio of courses that he has taught includes a 3 & 5 day derivative securities course to middle office personnel, a 3 day fixed income pricing and trading course to an MBA graduate in-take and a series of one day trading simulations (currency options, equities, fixed income and FX) where the pressures and rigours of the trading environment are truly brought to life.

He joined the ICMA Centre in 1994 and completed his PhD on the microstructure of the London SEAQ market in 1998. He holds a BA in Economics from the University of Leeds and an MSc in Finance from the University of Reading. He is currently reading for a BSc in Mathematics with The Open University and has a Diploma in Mathematics from the same institution.
